Capital Pride Prepares For 2008 Celebration; Welcomes Additional Community Partners

2008 Theme:'History. Vision. Legacy.'

WASHINGTON – 18 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and LGBT-friendly organizations have stepped forward to join Whitman-Walker Clinic in producing this year’s Capital Pride celebration, the Capital Pride Planning Committee announced today.

Capital Pride started the Community Partner program last year, and is excited at the amount of growth the program has already shown. "The involvement of the community in Capital Pride is extremely important," said David Mallory, director of Capital Pride for Whitman-Walker Clinic. "The commitment of the community partners will help to ensure the success of Capital Pride this year as well as in the future."

The 18 community partners are Arlington Gay & Lesbian Alliance; DC Center/Crystal Meth Working Group; DC Lambda Squares; DC Radical Faeries; DC Strokes Rowing Club; Dignity/Washington; Food & Friends; Gay Men's Chorus of Washington; Hillwood Museum & Gardens; Human Rights Campaign; Mautner Project; Metro DC PFLAG; Metropolitan Community Churches; National Youth Advocacy Coalition; One In Ten; Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice; Youth Pride Alliance; and the Washington DC Jewish Community Center

Each of these organizations has committed at least $1,000 to help present this year’s week-long celebration. In return the organizations receive a multitude of benefits as outlined in the Community Partner application packet available on the Capital Pride website. A portion of all sponsorships will be contributed to a fund for future Capital Pride celebrations.

The 2008 Capital Pride Planning Committee started working on this year’s celebration in September 2007. The Committee is comprised of 40+ volunteers and directed by David Mallory. Collectively they plan and execute the week-long celebration. "The passion and diversity of the Committee is reflected in all of the events planned for this year’s celebration," said Bill Miles, a member of the Committee who has been involved for 10+ years with Capital Pride. "The result is a week long celebration that is full of energy, information, and fun that appeals to the entire LGBT community, as well as our straight allies."

The 33rd annual celebration of Capital Pride will be marked by a week-long series of educational, civic and social events, beginning June 5 and culminating with the traditional parade Saturday, June 14, and street festival Sunday, June 15.
