ASIAN AMERICAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER PRIDE

2021
WASHINGTON, DC
AAPI Pride is a free community event that showcases the diverse and vibrant Queer AAPI community of the Washington metropolitan area. It builds on a tradition of programming by local AAPI LGBTQ+ organizations such as Pride & Heritage, celebrating both May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year’s June event will be a virtual event with the expectation that our event in the fall will be in-person. AAPI Pride is intended to empower queer Asian voices and narratives in a time when it is critical to center these voices in light of the recent wave of hate and violence against the community. AAPI Pride is presented by the Capital Pride Alliance in collaboration with Asian Pacific Islander Queer Society (APIQS), Asian and Pacific Islander Queers United for Action (AQUA D.C.), KhushDC, Korean Queer and Transgender Organization of DC (KQT DC), and the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA).

API Pride is presented by the Capital Pride Alliance in collaboration with Asian and Pacific Islander Queers United for Action (AQUA D.C.), Asian Pacific Islander Queer Society (APIQS), KhushDC, and Korean Queer & Transgender Association of DC (KQTDC), the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA), and the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs (MOLGBTQA).
Throughout the summer, we will host a virtual gallery space highlighting local artists, writers, and performers. Visitors will be able to view art, watch recorded performances, learn about local AAPI artists, and read community ‘Love Letters’ written by LGBTQ+ AAPIs to others who have inspired them. The event will be free and accessible online through a professional virtual gallery service and run from Pride Month and into the Fall.
In commemoration of numerous Asian traditions, API Pride will host a family friendly Mid-Autumn festival and Night Market alongside Capital Pride’s October programming. The street festival will feature stands for local businesses and organizations, live performances, art, and food from local Asian-owned restaurants and farms. To commemorate the festival, we will be offering lantern lighting, ancestral food offerings, tea ceremonies, and moon-themed activities to bring the community together after a long period of isolation and anti-Asian violence.”
