Established in 2008, the Capital Pride Alliance, Inc. (CPA) is a Washington, DC based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States. Through its stewardship of diverse programming and events, specifically year-round LGBTQ+ Pride festivities centered in Washington, DC and the National Capital Region, CPA serves to celebrate, educate, support, and inspire our multi-faceted communities in order to grow and preserve our history and protect our rights for current and future generations. CPA is dedicated to serving the needs of the LGBTQ+ community all year long, through educational programs, major events, fundraising, outreach and advocacy, providing platforms for visibility, and supporting the work of our many community organizations and local businesses.
The annual Capital Pride Celebration had grown from 2,000 people in its first year in 1975 to 10,000 people covering three blocks in 1979. By 1984, it had expanded to a week-long event and by 1987 an estimated 28,000 people attended the Festival and Parade. Attendance has continued to grow dramatically, and it is now one of the largest Pride celebrations in the United States, reaching over 650,000 people in 2023, through activities that are focused on celebrating, educating, and supporting our LGBTQ+ community, including the Capital Pride Parade and free Capital Pride Festival and Concert. The 50th anniversary celebration of Pride in the Nation’s Capital will take place in 2025. In addition, CPA has been given the honor of hosting WorldPride in 2025. WorldPride Washington, DC 2025 will feature a vibrant and innovative slate of events and cultural programs. Per InterPride regulations, this must include a Human Rights conference, a March, and opening and closing ceremonies. There will be additional events and programs throughout the gathering, either organized by CPA or in partnership with CPA, all of which will be officially a part of WorldPride 2025.
